Active Release Techniques (ART™)

What is Active Release Techniques (ART™) to Individuals, Athletes, and Patients?

ART™ is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART™. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

 How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is an ART™ treatment like?

Every ART™ session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART™ provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART™. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART™ is not a cookie-cutter approach.

Rock Tape

Rock tape is a form of kinesiology taping that was developed to help you move better. It’s used for the purposes of rehabilitation, edema/swelling management, neuropathic pain, scar mobility and postural management. Tape is used to decrease pain, unload tissue via decompression, and provide a novel stimulus that improves body awareness

IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

This technique is done using the FAKTR tool and incorporates the latest research and evidence-based soft-tissue techniques into a comprehensive protocol to treat common disorders of the muskuloskeletal system and complicated injuries quickly and easily with impressive results.  This is an instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) developed to include function and treatment of the kinetic chain while utilizing various forms of rehabilitation at the same time. This unique approach to treating in the position of provocation (pain, loss of range of motion, feeling of tightness within the fascia/soft tissues) and during motion sets FAKTR-certified providers in a class all their own.

FAKTR incorporates all of the above variations to evaluate and treat soft tissue/fascial conditions. FAKTR can treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions including tendinopathy, sprains, strains, entrapment syndromes, fascial restrictions such as plantar fasciitis, ITB syndrome, myofascial pain syndromes, adhesive capsulitis, shin splints and post-surgical recovery.  This list of conditions that can be treated with FAKTR protocols are too numerous to list here!

Who is the ideal patient for FAKTR?

While FAKTR is a great way to treat athletes quickly, the concept can be applied to all ages and all body types. FAKTR is excellent for those involved in auto accidents, work related injuries, sports injuries, post-surgical work including joint replacement and conditions of daily living.

Gait Re-Patterning

When treating soft-tissue dysfunction, it’s not enough to receive bodywork in order to release tension and adhesions between tissues. Actively correcting posture and movement patterns are the key to neuro-muscular re-training that has a more permanent effect on the current dysfuction and pain cycle. Dynamic movements along with stabilizing and strengthening exercises and Rock Tape are utilized to do so.

Frequently asked questions

Upon your first visit, please bring with you the health intake form, or arrive 10-15 minutes early. It’s recommended you book an hour for your first appointment. During that time, you’ll have a chance to discuss your complaint(s) and go through a full health intake. You’ll be given an assessment and taken through an evaluation to rule out any major contraindications to treatment, and to specify where your issue is arising. You’ll then be treated with the most applicable therapy.

Is Insurance Accepted?

No, but you can use your HSA cards for services. Most health insurance providers don’t cover massage therapy or Active Release Technique at this time. (This is not up to EDX Bodyworks as the Provider.) It’s the clients’ responsibility to call their insurance provider to find out what their coverage is. If the services offered are covered, you are still responsible for full out-of-pocket payment at the time services are rendered. The office can supply you with a detailed receipt which you can then submit for reimbursement from your insurance company if needed. We cannot do any third party billing.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Yes, we accept all major credit cards and cash for payment along (including HSA cards). Payment must be made at the time of your appointment.

Do I tip?

No. We charge a fair price for the services rendered. The best kind of tip is your referral. That’s how we stay in business!

Why don't you offer package deals?

Since every treatment is specifically tailored to the individual, there is no way to know how many sessions in total you may need. Some people only come in a couple times, while others may need more ongoing care. We don’t feel it’s fair if you were to purchase a package but then found out you only needed to use a portion of that package. Since we charge a price that we feel is fair, and do our best to get you back to a pain-free and fully functioning YOU, we prefer that you pay per session on an as-need basis.

What to Wear

Please wear or bring comfortable loose clothing, like yoga pants, gym shorts, sports bras or tank tops ect.. for your appointment. This is helpful during treatments to be able to access the skin on the areas being treated, as well as to be able to move around freely.

Is this a massage?

No. While massage may (or may not) be one of the tools utilized during the treatment, it won’t be the focus of the treatment. As a pain specialist, the treatments will include any method to help get you to where you want to be in the most effective and quickest way possible. An appointment with us is RESULTS DRIVEN, meaning you will come in with a goal -whether that’s getting out of pain, or moving with more ease, or something else- and we work with you to help you reach that goal.

How often should I come in? How many treatments will I need?

The frequency and number of treatments needed will vary upon the individual and the circumstance. In general, coming in consistently and regularly until you’ve reached your goal is recommended. You wouldn’t go to the gym only twice a week and expect to see changes. The same holds true for your muscles in recovery. Consistency is key. On average, most people benefit from weekly treatments until their symptoms subside – usually 4-8 sessions. For someone who has an acute injury, like a sprained ankle, shin splints, a broken bone or is even post-surgery, they will results by coming in twice a week for the first week or two, followed by weekly sessions until pain has substantially decreased. Our treatments create a permanent change in your structure, allowing each session to build upon the last, giving you FAST RESULTS you can count on.

What if I can’t make it to my appointment?

We have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. We understand that life happens. However, it is common courtesy to inform our business if you will be needing to cancel or reschedule an appointment 24-hours or more before your appointment. You will be expected to pay in full for any appointment cancelled within the 24-hour window.

You can easily cancel appointments through our online booking system, or by contacting the office directly at 720-432-9063 or Liliana@EDXCrossFit.com.
